Nutrition - It's Just Food Right?!
What it is that I actually do, and why it's more then what just gets put in your mouth
Over 3 years ago, I began studying for a Diploma in Nutritional Science, but my journey toward this has been much longer. A lot of people have a story about how they got on the 'health bandwagon' some with histories of being overweight, skin issues, health issues of family members etc etc. Whatever the reason, when I see people making a positive change for their health, it makes me happy. Mine was a skin issue that began over 8 years ago, however this is something I'll touch more on at a later date.
In this blog post, I aim to enlighten you with what my role as a Holistic/ Clinical Nutritionist is, what you can expect from seeing myself, who would benefit from my services and how it is very much more then what just gets put into our mouths.
For awhile, I had the mindset that it all starts with food - which yes! Food plays a massive role in a myriad of health conditions, however I now know that even beyond that a lot of the time, it's what we digest rather then what we ingest. This is because the status of our gut and the bacteria which resides there plays a massive role in not only our digestion - absorbing and utilising nutrients from food, elimination, brain function and our immunity. There are numerous factors which can upset the delicate balance and the proper functioning of the digestive system.
We are all Puzzles -
When I see someone for a consultation, they are like a puzzle. It is necessary to analyse all aspects of a person (pieces of the puzzle) to get a full understanding of what is going on. For example it doesn't work to increase a person's protein intake if they're showing signs and symptoms of protein malabsorption, it is necessary to look into why they are showing signs of this and to work on addressing it, from there up.
The Consultation Process -
Prior to seeing me, I send you a food and elimination dairy to fill out over 3 or more consecutive days. This gives me an insight into what goes in and what goes out - both of these are very important factors. Seeing what you currently consume and what a usual day for you is like is easy to build on, and alter here and there.
When you come to your consultation, I go through this with you, along with your family history and we talk about your health concern/s and what your aim is. I then go through with you all your body systems, looking deeper into areas which are affected. This not only covers your physical body, but also your physiological one too - your mindset, thought patterns, past and present experiences can play a massive role in your physical health too! For example emotional issues can oven come out in a physical way. For example constipation can sometimes be seen in those who are holding onto things from their past, constipation = constriction of the bowel.
The consultation also consists of a range of physical assessments, these are dependent on your individual health complaint and what I feel is necessary to further put pieces in the puzzle. This may include abdominal examination, blood pressure, looking in your ears, lymph node assessment, thyroid examination, Zinc tally and/or liver examination for example.
The skin, nails, tongue, sclera and iris are always areas I look at - it's amazing what connections can be made by assessing these areas. Some of the things that can be seen in these areas may include nutrient deficiencies, heavy metal toxicity, inflammation, allergies, thyroid malfunction, adrenal malfunction, candida and digestive over activity or insufficiency just to name a few.
Treatment Plan and Recommendations -
After piecing together all the puzzle pieces of your case, I put together a treatment plan with my recommendations specific to your individual needs. This generally includes dietary, lifestyle and supplement recommendations aimed at improving your presenting complaint, but also working with what will work for you and/or your family.
Recommendations often consist of small changes which can be implemented easily. It is important to make sustainable changes as it is what you do often which has the biggest impact. For this reason I usually include a range of recipes to get you started.
Additional Testing -
I have a range of additional testing methods at my fingertips. This includes sending you for blood tests, hair analysis to check food and environmental allergies, a range of hormone tests including adrenal function, reproductive hormones, candida and heavy metal toxicity just to name a few! This isn't a necessity but can be beneficial either later on or if there are gaps where more information may be required. These tests are done through reputable companies such as Allergenics, Nutrisearch and BioTrace to name a few.
Investment -
Initial consultation 120 minutes $60
Follow up when undertaken within 4 weeks post initial consultation 60 minutes $40
Additional Testing POA (prices depend on the type of test)
Treatment plan and recommendations are presented in a report format complete with additional, well researched information and recipes / meal ideas specific to your individual needs. This is sent via email with 5-7 days.
